Papier Mache Monday: Part II

We had a bit more to learn about making a papier mache mold. One of the teachers, Gerard Dumé, helped repair our beautiful sun mold that cracked over the weekend. We look forward to seeing the kids make and paint some suns soon.

Sunday in Centre-Ville Jacmel

Today we visited downtown Jacmel where, we understand, the earthquake was felt most in the city. While we are still absorbing what we saw — our initial impressions are that of the vibrancy of activity against the destruction.

Flags! Flags! Flags!

The Haitian flag is beautiful in its detail. These photos of works in progress and in completion show the talent at the Art Creation Foundation for Children. Bruno, Charles, Jephti and Sony are some of the artists featured here.

Traveling in Jacmel

We have learned that there are four ways for us to travel in Jacmel: taxi (but there is only one in the city), tap tap (bus), hitch-hiking (kind of) and — by moto!

Today, we made our own way to the Art Creation Foundation and we enjoyed two of the four. While walking to the main street to hail a moto, we were picked up by three very nice people from an Italian charitable organization. They drove us to downtown and from there we took a moto.

It was so much fun that we re-created the trip in these photos outside our hotel. The moto driver thought we were the funniest (and so did we).

Papier Mache Monday

Tomorrow (Sunday) will be a day off so, for our last project today, we prepared molds to make papier maché birds and suns on Monday. Tara tried to make a mold of a bird — but it just wasn’t up to standards … We also included a photo of a bird getting its colours, and a nest of completed birds. What do you think that bird is trying to say?

Painting = Happiness

Some of the younger artists were asked to paint something that makes them happy. Many abstract, colourful pictures came from this project as well as some tap taps (public transportation) and amazing Haitian landscapes. When they yell “soleil” it is time to put the paintings out in the sun to dry.

Day 2: The Work Begins!

We had a wonderful day at the Art Creation Foundation for Children. We met all the kids—all 73 of them! Our activities included prepping the canvas, practicing our rapping skills (using the roller as a mic), having a fashion show (the kids found the clothes we brought), and starting to make Haitian flags. As you will see by some of the photos, making a Haitian flag takes tremendous skill and concentration. We look forward to tomorrow. A bientôt!

Everything is OK

We are happy to report we have arrived in Jacmel safely and everything is OK, including our hotel. Driving from Port-au-Prince this morning we noticed the buildings left standing were tagged with either an “X” or an “OK”, indicating they are safe to occupy. There was a lot to absorb from our two hour drive though Port-au-Prince. But we are OK.
